“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”

Holding on tight to who you think you are can actually keep you small. Let go a little — there's a version of you waiting that you haven't even imagined yet.

Have you ever felt like you were holding onto a heavy, old coat even though the weather had changed to a warm summer afternoon? That is exactly what Lao Tzu is describing when he speaks about letting go. To me, this quote feels like a deep, cleansing breath. It suggests that our current identity, our habits, and even our labels are often just shells that we have outgrown. We spend so much energy trying to maintain the version of ourselves that everyone else recognizes, but in doing so, we accidentally block the sunlight from reaching the person we are actually becoming.

In our everyday lives, this letting go can be incredibly subtle. It isn't always about a massive life overhaul; sometimes it is about releasing the need to be right, or the need to be the person who always has everything under control. We cling to our past mistakes or our old titles because they feel safe and familiar. But there is a quiet magic that happens when we stop defining ourselves by what has been and start making space for what could be. It is the moment when the pressure to perform fades, and the possibility of growth takes its place.

I remember a time when I felt quite stuck, much like a little duckling trying to swim against a very strong current. I was so focused on being the 'perfectly organized' version of myself that I couldn't enjoy the simple joy of being messy and creative. I was clinging to a rigid identity that left no room for spontaneity. It wasn't until I allowed myself to fail at a few small things and embraced the uncertainty of not knowing the outcome that I felt a new sense of freedom. By letting go of the 'organized' label, I discovered a much more vibrant, adventurous side of myself that I never knew existed.

As you move through your day, I want you to think about one small thing you are carrying that no longer serves you. Is it a resentment, a fear, or perhaps an outdated belief about your own abilities? You don't have to drop everything all at once, but try to loosen your grip just a little bit. There is a beautiful, unwritten version of you waiting just on the other side of that release. Be gentle with yourself as you transition, and remember that every time you let go, you are simply making room for your truest self to bloom.
